Two languages, twice the ways of seeing.

Apoyo para estudiantes bilingües emergentes

Two languages are not a hurdle — they are two ways of seeing every idea. Here's how to make both of them work for you.

Study Strategies · Estrategias de estudio

Three moves that turn Spanish into a study superpower

Hunt for cognates

Thousands of academic words look alike and mean the same thing in English and Spanish — they share Latin roots. When a new English term appears, ask: does this look like a Spanish word I already know? If it does, you already own half the vocabulary of the lesson.

information · información biology · biología equation · ecuación fraction · fracción photosynthesis · fotosíntesis

Watch for false friends — words that look alike but mean different things:

library ≠ librería (bookstore) — it's biblioteca actually ≠ actualmente (currently) exit ≠ éxito (success)

En españolLos cognados son palabras que se parecen y significan lo mismo en inglés y en español. Úsalos como puentes entre tus dos idiomas — pero ten cuidado con los falsos amigos, que se parecen pero no significan lo mismo.

Dual-language Cornell notes

The Cornell format has three zones — and each one can live in a different language. Write your cue questions in the language you think in, capture the lesson's key terms in English exactly as your teacher uses them, and write the summary in both languages. Explaining an idea twice, in two languages, is one of the strongest memory techniques there is.

En españolEscribe tus preguntas y palabras clave en el idioma en que piensas, toma los apuntes con los términos en inglés que usa tu maestro, y escribe el resumen en los dos idiomas. Explicar una idea dos veces, en dos idiomas, la graba dos veces en la memoria.

Glossary-first reading

Before reading an assignment, skim it and list the bolded or repeated academic terms. Translate that short list first — a dictionary, a glossary, or a translation app is fine. Then read the full text. With the hard vocabulary already unlocked, you read for ideas instead of stopping at every unknown word.

En españolAntes de leer, haz una lista de los términos académicos del texto y tradúcelos primero. Después lee el texto completo: con el vocabulario ya claro, la lectura fluye y puedes concentrarte en las ideas.

Tools that speak Spanish

Every tool below is built to work for bilingual scholars: the structures are language-neutral, and the pages pair cleanly with your browser's built-in translation. Cada herramienta funciona en tu idioma.

A note on translation support: these tools are written in English today. Modern browsers (Chrome, Edge, Safari) can translate any of these pages into Spanish in one click — right-click the page and choose “Translate.” The math notation, note structures, and game mechanics are language-neutral, so nothing breaks in translation. Su navegador puede traducir estas páginas al español con un clic — y los números, las estructuras y los juegos funcionan igual en los dos idiomas.

You don't need English to raise a scholar

In English

  • Ask your child to teach you the lesson — in Spanish. Explaining an idea in their home language is the deepest check for understanding there is. If they can teach it, they know it.
  • Protect a time and a place. A consistent homework hour and a quiet spot do more for grades than any translation ever could. Routine is support.
  • Listen to reading in English, discuss it in Spanish. Have your child read aloud in English, then summarize what it meant to you in Spanish. Both languages get stronger.
  • Praise effort, not just results. “You haven't mastered it yet” is the most powerful sentence in learning — and it works in every language.

In-lesson Spanish glossary tooltips are coming

We're building full Spanish glossary support directly into our interactive lessons — hover a key term, see it in Spanish. That feature is not live yet. Today, the strategies and tools on this page are the best starting point, and they work right now.

Estamos construyendo glosarios en español integrados en las lecciones interactivas: al pasar el cursor sobre un término clave, lo verás en español. Esta función aún no está disponible. Mientras tanto, las estrategias y herramientas de esta página son el mejor punto de partida — y funcionan hoy mismo.
